Woodland Santa
Santa travels throughout the land, over hills, rivers and mountains to fulfill the wishes of little children all over the world. But at no time is he more mystical and magic than when he makes his way along the unmarked path of the deep, dark forests. Birds sing to him from their high perch on evergreen limbs, deer stop and perk up their ears as he passes by. Rabbits and chipmunks guide him along his way, as he walks through soft pine-strewn snow. The Woodland Santa is most at home in the dark, quiet forest. He stops to break off a few pine needles from a tree and as he breaks them apart and inhales their fresh pine scent, he hums a little song, happy and at peace with the night. As the Woodland Santa continues along, he sees the brilliant white stars twinkling through the branches of the pine trees and they remind him of the tiny lights on the trees in parlors and living rooms in homes throughout the world, all waiting for the gifts he brings to be placed underneath their branches. St. Nicholas and
the Christkind

Many of our Christmas traditions have been adopted from German Christmas customs. As in most European countries, Germany celebrates Christmas with many religious traditions and overtones. Angels and the Christ Child play a big part in their Christmas folklore. In Bavaria, the southern part of Germany bordering the Alps, St. Nicholas was thought to be the message-runner. He was the one who took the children's requests to heaven while the Christ Child, or Liebes Christkind (Dearest Christ Child) actually brought the gifts to children on Christmas morning. Sometimes this Christkind had wings like an angel, other times he looked more like the little boy Jesus. The presence of this Child reminds German children that Christmas is not only for receiving gifts but also a time to give gifts and joy to those less fortunate. St. Nicholas arrives on December 6th, his feast day. This day is the official start of the Christmas season in many European countries. The children put their shoes in front of their bedroom doors at night hoping St. Nicholas will fill them with goodies while they sleep. This stems from an old Dutch custom when children were instructed to leave out hay, straw and carrots for St. Nicholas’s horse; in the morning they would find that St. Nicholas had left them a present to thank them for their good deeds. Alaskan Santa
Its tundra, salmon-choked steams, icebergs majestic mountains and abundant wildlife make Alaska one of America’s most awe-inspiring states. Purchased from the Russians, who were facing difficult financial time, in 1867 by Secretary of State William Seward for$7.2 million, Alaska has proven to be one of the United States’ best investments. Tourism alone represents$830 million in annual revenue. Millions of visitors cruise, fly and hike through Alaska, hoping for a glimpse of a soaring eagle or grizzly bear. The Klondike Gold Strike in the Yukon in 1896 – 1898 brought thousands of men, and some women, into the state to try their luck at gold mining. Soon towns and businesses were established to service the influx of miners and families. When the gold ran out and the dreams lay frozen in the snow, those who stayed were the explorers and risk-taking individuals that brought their own customs and ideas to the land. Mingling the spirit of the miners with the ancient traditions of the Eskimo and other native Indian tribes has given Alaska its unique characteristics and made it the perfect example of America’s rugged individualism. Alaska is still a last frontier with pioneers setting out to explore it every year. The Alaskan Santa blends native culture with Christian tradition. His costume, worthy of a chief, is moose hide trimmed with beaver fur. It is elaborately decorated with beads, felt and cloth. His red sack, so full of toys, also bears a tree, a toy grizzly bear, a carved mask to honor ancestors, a drum and a toy hydroplane. In Santa’s pocket is a little toy seal, which is reminiscent of the seals that rest on floating icebergs throughout the straits of Alaska. The Alaskan Santa wouldn’t dream of travel without his best friend and wolf-like companion, the Alaskan Malamute. The affectionate and loyal dog helps Santa pull his sleigh on his way to bringing toys and gifts to children huddled in warm cozy homes all over Alaska. Retired

The Caring Santa
The Caring Santa is a bringer of gifts, food and toys. He is a gentle, kind, never-tiring old man who goes about his work with quiet dignity. His message is hope and good cheer. He gives his unbiased concern and compassion to all. He not only fulfills our dreams, he makes us dream. The Caring Santa pauses on his Christmas journey as he meets a little boy whose leg is in a cast. As we view this scene, it appears that The Caring Santa is giving the young boy a very special 1940 New York Line Circling Plane. But upon closer observation, we might wonder if the boy has just given his favorite toy to The Caring Santa. Who is the giver and the receiver? Just as is real life, it is not always clear. The Caring Santa will continue on his journey to ‘Santa’s Children Christmas Village.’ There, he will give other anxious children an escape from their illness or make their wishes come true. Feathered Friends
Santa has always found friends in animals; they accompany him everyday. They make him smile and give him a sense of peace during busy days of opening letters, making toys, scheduling his December 24th trip around the world and other tasks at hand. Birds are a favorite of Santa. He spends an hour each morning walking among them in his back garden, and during the afternoon hours he can view them from his North Pole office. He has built them platforms, tubes, and simple hopper-style feeders. The birds enjoy sunflower seeds, cracked corn, canary seed, peanut kernels, and suet. Above all, the birds love to eat out of Santa's hands, and as Santa whistles a holiday tune, the birds chirp along. Retired

Kris Kringle
In northern Germany, it was the custom that the Christkind, or Christ Child, brought the Christmas tree and gifts on Christmas Eve, replacing the image of St. Nicholas who was banned during the Protestant Reformation. As in many traditions that evolve, this Child eventually became Kris Kringle when German immigrants brought their customs to Pennsylvania. Kris Kringle, much like St. Nicholas, is the embodiment of all that is good, generous and kind. His arms are full of toys for the children of the world. His basket is filled with bears, dolls and sweet gingerbread treats. There are plenty of music-making toys, drums and horns that the children will play to joyfully proclaim the arrival of the Christmas season.

Sinter Klaas
While the Germans have given us much of our Christmas traditions, we can thank their neighbor to the north, Holland, for bringing Santa Claus to America. The Dutch celebrate Christmas more as a season than just a day, beginning with December 6th, St. Nicholas Day, through December 25th, Christmas Day. On St. Nicholas Day, Sinter Klaas comes to Amsterdam by boat on one of the city’s many canals. Traffic and businesses come to a halt as people line the streets to greet him. Sinter Klaas, dressed in Bishop attire and carrying a mitre, rides his white horse to the royal palace where children are waiting. The royal children tell Sinter Klaas all about their behavior during the past year. Retired

The Painting Santa
It's surprising to Santa that on this year's wish lists there are a lot of wishes for Santas! Now while Santa knows that his image, on everything from gift wrap to ornaments, has been very collectible throughout the years, he is nevertheless slightly amused and humbled that anyone would want to see his smiling face on anything! Well, if they want his image, at least he'll put it on something useful like these new candy containers which were once popular during the early 1900's. Made out of paper maché and molded into cheery figures, the candy containers pull apart, revealing a cavity where Christmas candy can be hidden. With a stroke of his paint brush, Santa puts the finishing touches on each container, thereby making them highly valuable. After all, who wouldn't want a Santa that has been hand-painted by Santa!!! Snowflake Santa
It just wouldn't be Christmas without snow, and ideally, it should begin snowing on Christmas Eve when night approaches and the dark neighborhoods begin to glow with the warm lights shining from the windows of the houses along the streets. That's when big soft snowflakes falling from the sky dance in the light of the street lamps. As they blanket the earth a divine quietness fills the air, a quietness that seems to anticipate the joyful event of Christ's birth. The Snowflake Santa, in his white coat, almost blends into the night as he goes from house to house to deliver his gifts. It is only his red skirt, bordered in big white snowflakes, that stands out against the crystal whiteness of the night. On his back he carries a large basket full to the top with toys, and this generous old man even has extra toys tied to his belt: a brass horn, drum, and a tiny rocking horse. Just as no two snowflakes in the world are alike, no one experiences Christmas in the same exact way and yet we can be sure that every family, child and friend celebrates Christmas in their own way, making and keeping traditions. We are each as unique and beautiful as a snowflake. Retired

Babbo Natale
Pipka's Babbo Natale brings together all the elements of an Italian Christmas. He is dressed in deep red rich robes, similar to those worn by the Roman clergy. From his waist hangs an ornate cross and in his arms is a beautiful Nativity Scene surrounded by beautifully wrapped gifts. On his back, Babbo Natale carries a large basket filled with packages and gifts. A puppet theater peeks out of one corner of the basket. He carries a tree decorated with fruits and bright foil-covered candies that are seen in many Italian homes, plus rockets and firecrackers for New Years Eve, when every household in Italy contributes to a dazzling display of fireworks and noisy revelry. This custom dates back to ancient times when it was thought that fire and noise would drive away evil spirits. On the basket carrier stands a tall, tree-like shape called a ceppo which has three tiers to hold fruits, a nativity and small gifts. It is crowned with an angel. Babbo Natale will fulfill many dreams in the homes of Italian children everywhere. "Buon Natale," which is Italian for "Merry Christmas." Retired
