The Dutch celebrate Christmas more as a season than just a day, beginning with December 6th, St. Nicholas Day, through December 25th, Christmas Day. On St. Nicholas Day, Sinter Klaas comes to Amsterdam by boat on one of the city’s many canals. Traffic and businesses come to a halt as people line the streets to greet him. Sinter Klaas, dressed in Bishop attire and carrying a mitre, rides his white horse to the royal palace where children are waiting. The royal children tell Sinter Klaas all about their behavior during the past year. Retired
