Emerald Isle Irish Santa
It's Christmas time and the jolly Emerald Isle Irish Santa is on his special journey. He stops a moment to place a festive wreath on a sign post before he continues on his way. He will travel all over Ireland, from Dublin, to Belfast to Kerry, bringing his cheer and good joy as he shouts “Nodlaig Nait Cugat,” Happy Christmas to all! The Irish Santa has a special Christmas greeting for you: Wishing you always, Walls from the wind And a roof for the rain And tea beside the fire: Laughter to cheer you, And those you love near you And all that your heart might desire! Accompanying the Emerald Isle Irish Santa are the Irish Angel, Kathleen, and three mischievous leprechauns. Leprechauns may be a little grumpy at times, but love to lend a helping hand to Santa. They quietly fill children's stockings and pillow cases with oranges, apples, and nuts. They also carry the wreaths and small trees that Santa will deliver, as well as the little Irish houses that go under the Christmas tree. Keep in mind that during the holiday season, leprechauns are helpful and congenial, but watch out -- the rest of the year, they love to play tricks. Kathleen, the Irish Angel is also on this special journey. She is the guardian, keeping all safe on this night and throughout the year. Kathleen carries a basket filled with unlit candles, which she will place in the windows of the homes she visits. According to Irish belief, the candle was a symbol of welcome to Mary and Joseph who sought shelter that first Christmas Eve. Like the Emerald Isle Santa, she carries an armful of holly, harvested from the hills of south Ireland.
Leprechaun myth: Each leprechaun carries two leather pouches. In one pouch there is a silver shilling, a magical coin that returns to the purse each time it is paid out. The other pouch carries a gold coin, which he uses to try and bribe his way out of difficult situations. The coin can turn to leaves and ashes once the leprechaun has parted with it.
